Square: An unit of roof area equal to 100 square feet.
Valley: The trough-like intersection point between two
adjoining roof lines. For example: The intersection point between a
dormer and a main roof is a valley.
Peak: Just as it sounds. The pointy bit at the top of an
angled roof.
Fascia: The horizontal face that surrounds the edges of a
peaked roof.
Drip Edge: An aluminum or steel strip that surrounds the
perimeter of a roof and keeps moisture from seeping under roofing
materials and damaging the roof structure
Roof Rip: The removal and disposal of existing roof shingles.
Soft spots: The dipping of roof due to either inadequate roof sheathing and or improper roof rafter spacing.
Starter strip: Asphalt strips installed at all roof edges used as guide for straight installation.
Felt paper: Asphalt roof underlayment used as a roof substrate as well as first layer of waterproofing. Also assists in allowing shingles to lay flat.
Ice & water shield: Protective self sealing roof barrier
installed over all eaves, valleys & rakes in order to keep all ice and water from damming up under roof shingles. {also required by
NYS code}
Capping: Matching roof covering installed at all peaks.
Ridge venting: A flexible, breathable rolled out ventilation product installed at peak of roof with pitch greater than 15 degrees.
Pipe flanges: Aluminum boots with pliable rubber flange used to seal around ventilation pipes.
Ventilation fans: Either solar or hard wired roof fan which is sized specified to each roof allowing complete roof ventilation.
Thermostat and humidistat to be included for year round protection.
